 2017 Preview 


       Central completed the 2016 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Central captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Central made a nice playoff run in 2016, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good McGill-Toolen team by the score of 35-21.

       The high-scoring Central Phenix City offense ranked 22nd in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.9 points a game.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Central has gone a combined 62-21. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 7A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Central has gone a combined 212-86. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 7A and 28th in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-four winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008.

       The Red Devils are led by head coach Jamey Dubose who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-8 over the past three seasons at Central. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Dubose.

       Coach Dubose's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 100-37 (73.0%). His 100 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Dubose's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won six region championships. Coach Dubose won two state championships prior to arriving at Central, the last coming in 2011 at .

       The Central Red Devils will play in Class 7A region two during the 2017 season.

       The Red Devils enter the 2017 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak.

       The Red Devils should be considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      The defense returns Junior defender Damon Jones who registered 3 interceptions last year.

       The Red Devils open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Bob Jones on Friday, August 25 at Garrett-Harrison Stadium. Last year the Bob Jones Patriots finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 7A region four. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Hoover by a score of 31-10.

       This will be the second meeting between Central Phenix City and Bob Jones on the football field. The Red Devils have a 1-0-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in with

       Central returns 7A All-State Senior offensive lineman Jahlil Ryles. He was named to the second team last season. The Red Devils also return Senior receiver Justyn Ross. He was named to the first team.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
